FAQ

What are proteins and why do they matter?
It’s the composition of proteins that’s important. Proteins are made up of amino acids – think of them as little building blocks – and the amount of these amino acids is crucial. Proteins in dry cat food have to correspond to the amount and composition of a cat’s natural food. Some of the amino acids that cats need are only found in animal proteins. These amino acids are important for muscles, skin, fur, blood and many other tissues, meaning they are essential for your pet.

How can I prevent my cat getting hairballs?
Cats spend half their day grooming themselves, which significantly determines the well-being of the animal. Because a cat’s tongue has a rough surface, hair gets caught on it and is accidentally swallowed. This hair is then combined with feed ingredients, gastric juices, saliva etc. and forms hairballs of various sizes. The following cats are particularly at risk of hairballs:

  • Long-haired cats
  • Fat cats
  • Cats with a parasite infection
  • Old cats due to their reduced intestinal motor function.

For cats with ‘hairball problems’, GimCat has been making proven anti-hairball products for many years, e.g. GimCat Malt-Soft Extra, GimCat Anti-Hairball Pastes, GimCat Anti-Hairball Tabs.

How should I feed an older cat?
As cats age, a lot changes. A good diet should address these changing circumstances. What changes exactly?

  • Sense of smell diminishes
  • Weight loss – many old cats become very skinny
  • Coat loses vitality
  • Kidney function diminishes
  • Cells are more likely to be attacked by metabolic toxins, also known as free radicals
  • More frequent constipation as the gut becomes less active

Look out for the following characteristics in high-quality food for senior cats:

  • High acceptance and very easily digestible ingredients
  • Increased protein and fat to prevent weight loss
  • High-quality essential fatty acids to foster healthy skin and hair
  • Reduced phosphorous to protect the kidneys
  • Increased Vitamin E and C to protect the cells

Our GimCat Senior Paste with its BALANCED-AGEING FORMULA contains a high-quality, active-ingredient complex that limits this particular spectrum of age-related changes and thus reduces the symptoms that come with them. The paste therefore has a positive effect on:

  • Fat metabolism and protein digestion
  • Skin and fur problems
  • Joint wear (arthrosis)

Can I give my cat a vegetarian diet?
Cats are natural carnivores. Even if you and your family follow a vegetarian diet, you should give your cat meat on a regular basis as they need it for its special proteins!

Why do some of your pastes contain antioxidants?
Our pastes contain high-quality oils with essential, unsaturated fatty acids. These oils have a naturally short shelf-life as they can be affected by atmospheric oxygen. If we were to use more stable oils, they would contain significantly fewer unsaturated fatty acids.
To ensure that our pastes remain stable and do not go rancid or become unpleasantly bitter, we have to add antioxidants to them. If our products contain antioxidants, we always declare this on the packaging. This allows the buyer to decide if the advantages of the paste are higher than the danger presented by the low level of antioxidants and the subsequent spoilage of the product if they weren’t present.
The BHT we use is approved for cats and the authorisation procedure found it to be suitable for the animal species ‘cat’. We never use ethoxyquin as an antioxidant.

Are GimCat pastes grain free?
Our pastes are not grain free.

Do you use palm oil in GimCat pastes?
We do not use palm oil in our pastes.

Do GimCat pastes contain animal or vegetable oils?
We use high-quality vegetables oils as well as fish oils in some pastes (e.g., in GimCat Multi-Vitamin Paste Extra).

How long will the pastes keep after opening?
The best-before date is printed on the box and only applies to the unopened tube. Once the tube is open, we cannot guarantee a certain shelf life. However, after having talked to our quality assurance team, we can say that our pastes will usually keep for at least 4–5 weeks after opening if they are stored in a cool, hygienic environment. The number of vitamins stated can only be guaranteed for the original, unopened product as vitamin depletion is influenced by a wide range of factors.

How should I store GimCat pastes?
Once opened, please keep them in the fridge. Bring the tube back up to room temperature before feeding the paste to your cat.

Can I give my cat a range of different GimCat pastes?
Yes, you can give your cat a range of different GimCat pastes.

Do you also make grain-free products for cats?
The following products from our GimCat range are grain free:

  • Sticks
  • Soft & Crunchy Snacks
  • Functional Tabs (Multi-Vitamin Tabs, Skin & Coat Tabs and Denta-Tabs)
  • Tasty Tabs (Milk Bits, Mint Tips, Cheezies, Gras Bits)

What does it mean when the packaging says that snacks contain animal/vegetable by-products?
Basically, the following applies: No matter how essential they are, all ingredients used are declared within declaration groups that are prescribed by law. For example, malt is an important component of our Anti-Hairball Paste and falls under the category ‘derivatives of vegetable origin’. The same applies to essential crude fibres.
Here’s another example: ‘Meat’ is declared in the ‘meat and animal derivatives’ group. When it comes to this designation, we adhere very strictly to the German Feed Regulation and the European Feed Law – as we do with all our declarations and with all ingredients used. According to these regulations, animal by-products are clearly defined for meat constituents that are not skeletal muscle such as fillet, chops or rump. We use high-quality animal by-products from the lungs, liver or kidneys that are available at every slaughterhouse. This is not slaughterhouse waste, but feed components that have always been part of a cat’s natural diet. Furthermore, we do not use any waste from the bread-making industry.
There is also the question of whether pure muscle meat is really healthy for cats. A cat’s natural diet would consist of mice, frogs, birds etc. However, the cat will only be consuming a very low amount of muscle meat in addition to the offal, tendons, skin, eyes, brain etc. It wouldn’t be natural to only give a cat pure muscle meat and it would not provide them with the nutrition they require.

Why do some of your products contain sugar and carbohydrates?
Many carbohydrates are sources and reservoirs of energy and can be digested to varying degrees. The usability of these carbs differs depending on the type of animal or the organism. While monosaccharide glucose (dextrose) acts as an energy transporter in the blood of vertebrates, cellulose can only be digested by ruminants, termites and hindgut fermenters. However, carbohydrates also provide prebiotics, which promote the growth of desirable bacteria in the intestine and thus suppress pathogenic germs. If you follow our feeding guidelines, you cat will consume approx. 0.5–0.65 g of maltose per day via our cat pastes, for example. Premium commercial cat food contains approx. 30–33% starch. According to the usual feeding recommendations for such food, your cat would consume between 20 and 23 g of starch per day. Starch consists of d-glucose – aka dextrose. Consequentially, a normal daily portion of a premium staple food contains approx. 35x more glucose than a daily portion of cat paste.
The various sugars and other carbohydrates are processed differently in the animal’s body and therefore cannot be compared like for like. You also cannot compare species and apply the principles of the human digestive system to dogs and cats, for example.

Why is GimCat Shiny Cat only a supplementary food?
Due to its composition, this product is not intended as a complete pet food as it does not contain enough trace elements and minerals. A complete pet food for cats would usually contain added vitamins and minerals.

How long will GimCat Cat Milk Powder keep once the tin is opened?
As long as you use the product hygienically (i.e. using a clean spoon every time and closing the tin immediately after use) and store it in a cool, dry place, the Cat Milk can be used until the best-before date printed on the tin. However, we do recommend a quick sight and smell check before using the product.

How much GimCat Cat Milk Powder corresponds to the measuring spoon mentioned?
A measuring spoon is 5 g of Cat Milk Powder.

FAQ

What is bentonite?
Bentonite is a mixture of natural clay minerals and has pores that can open and close. That means the clay is able to absorb liquid and encapsulate it. This creates clumps, and as such our bentonite cat litter is a naturally clumping litter.

How and where is bentonite obtained?
Bentonite is a natural clay and is usually mined at very great depths – sometimes up to 30 metres below the earth’s surface. This means that correspondingly deep pits have to be created. There are quite a few areas in Europe with clay-rich soil. In Germany, the soil in Bavaria is particularly rich in bentonite and we primarily use Bavarian bentonite in our products. As our production facility is located in Kelheim in Bavaria, we can guarantee short, environmentally friendly delivery routes.

Are there different types of bentonite? What about its colour?
Bentonite is a natural raw material that is subject to natural irregularities. These include the condition of the bentonite in the pit and the climate, both of which can influence the absorbency and the colour of the clay. However, the colour is no indicator of quality; it’s a purely optical factor.

What happens to clay pits once they are depleted?
During the entire mining process, geologists constantly monitor the pits to ensure that the environment’s natural balance is preserved. After mining, the bentonite pits are re-cultivated and re-naturalised. This means they are carefully sown with new seeds that grow into mixed forests, agricultural land and biotopes. The aim of re-cultivation is to ensure gentle treatment of the new environment. Furthermore, we also aim to retain and multiply the biodiversity and encourage people to care for our countryside.

Why are cleanliness and hygiene so important to cats?
A cat’s pronounced sense of cleanliness and hygiene is innate. By intensively cleaning themselves, they impregnate their fur against moisture and the like. Cats are also very discerning when it comes to hygiene in the litter tray and will avoid it if it smells bad. That’s the advantage of Biokat’s natural clay, clumping cat litter: it binds odours tightly in its pores, making it the ideal litter for long-lasting hygiene in the litter tray.

Why won’t my cat use their litter tray?
There can be many reasons for a cat’s refusal to use the litter tray. They will notice, for example, if the usual litter has been swapped for a different brand. Cats are very ritualistic animals with ingrained habits so they don’t deal well with change. Another reason could be that there isn’t enough litter in the tray. Cats will dig when they have done their business; in the wild this behaviour serves to protect the cat as it means that their enemies will not be able to track them. Despite being long domesticated, cats have not lost this instinct to dig and bury their waste. To make it easier for your cat to go in the litter tray, try filling it with a little more litter than usual.

How much litter should I add to the litter tray?
To ensure correct usage and to get the most out of the cat litter, we recommend making sure that the granules are evenly mixed when pouring them into the litter tray. As a rule, we recommend filling the litter tray with 7 cm of cat litter. If you have multiple cats all using the same litter tray, the amount of litter may vary. This helps ensure that the litter can always form proper clumps.

How often should I remove clumps from the litter tray?
We recommend removing the clumps three times a day. Complete cleaning of the litter tray depends on a range of factors, such as how many cats use the tray and how often they use it per day.
How often should I completely empty the litter tray?
As a general rule, all the litter in the tray should be replaced every 4–6 weeks. However, your own judgement also plays an important role here. If you have the feeling that the litter is beginning to smell earlier than 4–6 weeks, you can of course replace it sooner.

How do I store the paper bag correctly?
The paper bag should be stored in a dry place in an environment with normal humidity. Damp air will make the paper rip more easily and will also make the litter less effective as it will absorb the moisture.

How do I dispose of used cat litter?
As a general rule, cat litter should be disposed of with general household waste or with the organic waste matter. This can vary from region to region. Make sure you follow the guidelines set out by your local authorities. Do not flush cat litter down the toilet!

Is Biokat’s bentonite cat litter compostable?
Biokat’s natural clay, bentonite litter is not compostable. ‘Compostable’ refers to organic matter that decomposes – this is not the case for bentonite. However, a maximum amount of 25 kg/m³ of bentonite cat litter can be used to improve compost.
Disposing of used cat litter in the compost is generally not recommended. Therefore, we advise you to dispose of it via the regular household waste or, if approved by your local authority, along with the organic waste matter.

What is meant by absorbency in terms of cat litter?
Absorbency means how much liquid cat litter can soak up. The higher the absorbency, the more liquid the litter retains.
Why does my litter make dust?
Biokat’s is a low-dust litter. However, it can create dust if the packaging has been subject to friction, which may occur during transport. Therefore, you shouldn’t leave the litter in the car too long after purchase. Although modern cars have good suspension, every movement can cause friction among the grains in the packaging. Clay is a very sensitive material. When filling up the litter tray, be sure to hold the sack as close to the tray as possible.

Why can’t I smell my scented litter?
No scent? No way! All the bentonite grains in Biokat’s scented cat litter are automatically scent-treated in our factory. So why does the litter seem to be unscented? It’s quite simple really and is all down to a physical process. Bentonite has pores that encapsulate the added scent. When the grains get wet, the pores open up again and release the scent. That means the spring scent of Biokat’s is only discernible once your cat has urinated on it. The scent is hardly noticeable in litter that is new or unused.

Are the scents like those in Biokat’s Classic fresh harmful to cats?
No! Cats have a special organ called Jacobson’s organ that acts like a super nose. Thanks to this special olfactory organ, cats are able to differentiate very precisely between scents they find pleasant and scents they don’t like. So, if a cat doesn’t like a scent, he will make it known, e.g., by avoiding the litter tray. Biokat’s tries to use only those scents that you also find in nature. For example, Biokat’s Classic fresh smells like meadows and herbs while Biokat’s Micro fresh smells like summer flowers.

Why is my cat litter being tracked through the house?
Litter tracking and scattering depends on the individual behaviour of the cat. Due to their weight, coarse grains are much less likely to be tracked out of the litter box than fine or natural fibre litter. This works in around 90% of cases, but there are, of course, always exceptions such as:
• Cats who dig vigorously and scatter the litter out of the box or tray
• The grains getting stuck between the toes and paw pads due to digging in the litter box
• Long-haired cats that are brushed regularly – the grains adhere easier to the fur due to static electricity

My cat is eating their litter! How bad is it?
Bentonite is a natural clay. There are many reasons why your cat might be eating bentonite litter. Cats have a very sensitive physique and if deficiency symptoms appear they will try to compensate for this. This is a purely natural reflex. Eating bentonite means that your cat notices a mineral deficiency. By adding minerals to their diet, e.g., in the form of supplementary food, you can help prevent your cat eating the litter.
If you cat eats the litter just once, it’s not a problem
as the litter will simply be expelled via the faeces. If your cat has eaten a lot of litter, you should seek precautionary veterinarian advice, as a large amount of clay in the stomach can lead to complications.

FAQ

Do you use artificial flavourings or flavour enhancers?
No. None of our products contain any artificial flavourings or flavour enhancers.
If dogs like our products it’s all due to the good, natural ingredients they contain.

What does the term ‘animal derivatives’ mean in the list of ingredients?
When it comes to this designation, we adhere very strictly to the German Feed Regulation and the European Feed Law – as we do with all our declarations and with all ingredients used. According to these regulations, animal by-products are clearly defined for meat constituents that are not skeletal muscle such as fillet, chops or rump. We use high-quality animal by-products from the lungs, liver or kidneys that are available at every slaughterhouse. This not slaughterhouse waste, but feed components that for predators like dogs have always been part of their natural diet. Nowadays, these components are used as standard for raw feeding.
For example, our Fruity Menu only contains food-quality raw materials; animal-derived components that are suitable for human consumption. Pure muscle meat alone is not sufficient for a healthy, balanced diet for your dog. Dogs are carnivores that consume their prey in its entirety and also consume a varying amount of plant-based food. The offal contains vitamins, minerals and trace elements that are both vital for and extremely delicious to your dog. Furthermore, we do not use any waste from the bread-making industry.

What does ‘fish and fish derivatives’ mean?
The term ‘fish and fish derivatives’ is a group designation that is approved for the declaration of animal ingredients originating from fish according to the European Feed Law. This group designation comprises the various components of the fish. Fish contains a high percentage of unsaturated fatty acids, lots of easily digestible protein, and vitamin D and also has a good calcium-to-phosphorous ratio making it extremely nutritious for your dog. For our Fruity Menu, we only use cooked tuna or salmon.
You often hear warnings against giving fish to dogs. This is due to thiaminase, an enzyme in the fish that breaks down vitamin B1. However, this is prevented by the cooking process that our fish undergo. Therefore, there’s no harm in your four-legged friend enjoying our fish-based products.

Why do you use chicken and/or turkey in your poultry products?
Why not? We use high-quality meat meal of verifiable origin that is produced in Europe. We don’t see any reason not to make dog snacks from this raw material.

You say that you use ‘oils and fats’. What does that mean exactly?
We use pure vegetable oils. In our GimDog pastes these oils also contain a high percentage of linolenic acid, which has a positive influence on skin conditions. Animal nutritionists recommend a daily minimum intake of 50 mg of linolenic acid per kg of body weight.

Some of your products mention ‘derivatives of vegetable origin’. What does that mean exactly?
These are proteins, from peas for example. Here as well we adhere strictly to the requirements of the German Feed Regulation, even though the term ‘derivatives of vegetable origin’ is confusing for the people purchasing the product.

Some of your products say they contain ‘chemical additives’. What does that mean?
This includes vitamins and minerals that can be created synthetically and biologically. All of them are listed individually on both our packaging and on our website.

Why do some of your products contain cereals?
Without using cereals as a carrier material, it would not be possible to make some of our snacks, e.g., the small, bone-shaped Nutri Snacks. However, we do try to keep the use of cereals to a minimum. The amounts we use will not lead to food allergies in healthy dogs. Furthermore, none of our products have been reported to trigger allergies. It’s often reported that cereals are bad for your dog. That is incorrect. Many types of cereals and grains, such as wheat and rice, are good sources of energy and fibre for dogs. The carbohydrates in the grains provide your dog with essential energy to keep them fit and healthy. Fibre allows nutrients to be absorbed and regulates digestion. All macro nutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) are essential for a balanced, healthy diet. Cereals are some of the most important and healthy sources of carbohydrates. As long as your dog does not suffer from a grain allergy, you can feed them products containing cereals. Our Fruity Menu contains just 2–5% cereals. We don’t just use grains as a cheap filler as is often suspected.

Why is the declaration on your products not broken down more precisely?
The European Feed Law allows pet food manufacturers to decide whether they want to declare their formulas or if they prefer to protect their proprietary recipes by consolidating the individual ingredients into groups. This in no way absolves the manufacturer from complying with all the regulations and does not give them any special rights. When declaring our products, we adhere strictly to the requirements for group designations, which are defined in the feed regulation (No. 767/2009 Art. 17 Nr. 2c). The group designation combines various raw materials into one group. The definitions and names are regulated throughout the EU and are therefore comprehensible for everyone. For example, the 4% in the declaration of meat and animal derivatives on the Little Darling Fruity Menu relates only to the meat or fish components that are critical for taste and which are mentioned on the packaging, e.g. tuna. In actual fact, our Fruity Menus contain between 39.5% and 54% raw material of animal origin.

Quality

If we’re being honest, we often pay more attention to what our pets eat than what we eat. Our guiding principle is ‘Creating magical moments between pets and humans’ and this can only work if we can give our pets treats with a clear conscience and with the utmost faith in the product.
To ensure that our products fulfil the highest quality standards and that we can honour our product promise, we maintain an exemplary quality culture in our day-to-day business activities – from the management board to the outgoing goods department.

Regular laboratory analyses, acceptance tests and also a close working relationship with scientists and the authorities ensure that our products are ‘state of the art’. That’s how we put the magic into those moments.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a top priority for all our brands and it’s something we’re proud of!
For example, our Biokat’s cat litter is made from natural clay, a naturally occurring raw material in Bavaria, and is processed and packaged less than 100 km away at our factory. That really lives up to the ‘Made in Germany’ label. The areas mined for the clay are later re-cultivated and, after a few years, provide a wonderful green area where native animals and plants can thrive.

For our commitment to sustainability, we received the German Award for Excellence.

We know just how precious our environment is and the responsibility that each of us has towards it. To further demonstrate our special commitment to the environment, we introduced an energy management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50.001, which has been certified by DEKRA Certification GmbH since 2015.

Last but not least, we also set up a bicycle leasing programme for our staff. After all, the Lower Rhine region is such a beautiful place to discover by bike!

About us

In 1855, the company H. von Gimborn was founded as a chemical-pharmaceutical factory by pharmacist Heinrich von Gimborn. Initially, the company focused on producing pastes and tablets for human consumption – analogous to today's products for animals.

Since 1965, when we created the first lactose-reduced milk for rearing kittens, we have been manufacturing our products at our factory in Emmerich am Rhein in the Lower Rhine region right on the Dutch border. Over time, we expanded our focus to include dogs and our brand GimDog entered the pet food snack sector alongside GimCat.

Since 1997, we have been using our accumulated knowledge of all things ‘cat’ to bring everything full circle and create cat litter from betonite, a naturally occurring clay found in Bavaria. Cat litter from the Biokat’s brand has ever since been made in our factory in Kelheim.

Our locations

Gimborn has two state-of-the-art production facilities in Germany.

We make our snacks and treats in Emmerich am Rhein and our cat litter at the factory in Kelheim, Bavaria. Gimborn has invested extensively in both locations over the last few years and can rely on innovative and effective manufacturing processes.

Other important locations receive deliveries from these two factories. These other locations can be found in Spain, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Hungary, Greece, Russia and the beautiful Reggio Emilia in Italy. All over the world, proud pet parents know they can trust the ‘Made in Germany’ quality.
